Overvoltage refers to any voltage whose peak value is greater than the corresponding peak value of the maximum steady-state voltage under normal operation. In engineering, it refers to all dangerous voltages that may cause damage to equipment. Therefore, in engineering, some devices that are greater than the normal operating voltage peak but not sufficient to endanger the positive and negative identification results of the equipment are excluded. Overvoltage includes:
(1) Transient overvoltage, with a duration of milliseconds or less, is the main protective object of lightning arresters.
(2) Transient overvoltage or short-term overvoltage, with a relatively long duration, generally between 0.1s and 1s.
The main sources of transient overvoltage include lightning strikes, switch operations, electrostatic discharge, and nuclear explosions. At communication bureau stations, it is mainly lightning overvoltage or lightning stroke overvoltage. Transient overvoltage mainly includes: transfer overvoltage, zero break overvoltage, line break resonance overvoltage, and overvoltage formed by neutral line drift. In addition, the capacitance effect, asymmetric grounding faults, and sudden load shedding of no-load lines may also generate dangerous overvoltage.
